Love, Love, Love (Think Beatles’ Song As You Read the Title!)

I have no idea why I feel the need to write song titles for the titles of my blogs, but they just keep cropping up!!

The other day I went to see Shrek the Musical and I absolutely loved it!! When I told someone that I’d been to see it, they looked at me in disdain with a ‘why in the world would you want to see that?’ kind of look. Okay, so it’s not Hamlet, and yes, Brian Darcy James, a wonderful Broadway performer, does begin the show by scratching his butt. However, this show really lifts your spirits and has you leaving with a smile.

I don’t think that any of the actors did less of a job in Shrek than they would in any of Shakespeare’s plays. They committed to the characters 100 % and that made them believable. As actors, aren’t we all in entertainment? Whether it’s a dramatic play or a light-hearted musical isn’t it our goal to entertain? Well, this cast certainly does.

I was lucky enough to babysit for a very good friend of Brian Darcy James’ and so got to go backstage after the show to meet him. His dresser was letting me feel the weight of his fat suit and the weight of his costume. Now, let me tell you the whole outfit weighed a ridiculous amount, I really cannot believe how he even manages to walk from the dressing room to the stage, it’s that heavy. Now for him to have to perform with that much weight and all the make up on his face he has to love his job, as no one would put up with that if they didn’t.  Heck I would put on that outfit and make up to perform on Broadway!!

We keep getting told at school if we don’t love it, then we shouldn’t pursue the career. It sounds harsh but its so true. It’s not an easy job being an actor, so you really do need the passion, drive and the love for it to be worth it!
