The Actor’s Process #106 (You’re Not Alone Anymore)

 class picture

Community.

Finding people who think the way you think.  Finding people who inspire you to think beyond the way you think now.  Friends who don’t let you settle.  Friends who help you discover new things and who you’d like to be in the future.  Isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

For most artists, there is a degree of aloneness to childhood.  You are the bright shining child full of ideas and art and you soon learn that not many other people see the world as you do.  Hopefully, you avoided this often painful discovery.  If not, you learned to dim yourself a bit in order to fit in with the rest.  Now…it’s time to shine.  Stop trying to fit in.  There is no need to do this anymore.

You are in New York City.  There are many people here who think and feel the same way you do.  If you’re not sure how you feel about something, there are plenty of views to investigate.  You are not alone.

Your assignment: find the people you belong with.  Find your friends.  Choose wisely.  Report back to us how you chose these people in your community.

I had a musician friend who once shared with me these tips for finding fellow artists.  I like them, so I’m passing them on to you.  Hopefully they’ll help you attract the kind of friends you’re looking for:

  • Create your own artistic environment (a clean room with inspiring objects)
  • Create solitude to think
  • Challenge yourself to stand up for your beliefs
  • Choose to be around positive & creative people who tell the truth – even if it hurts
